Today's Applicant.... tomorrows Hiring Manager.
Karl at Whatjobsite wrote a great article recently titled "Thank you for your application."
The main points that Karl covers in his article is that a candidate puts such a lot of hard work and effort into an application and then on a lot of occasions gets nothing... no response at all. How would you feel if this was you?
In my opinion more importantly the applicant that you have just ignored could become a Hiring Manager in the near future. Do you think they would then use your organisation after the experience they had?
Don't get me wrong, many of our advertisers habitually respond to applicants but there are also many out there that don't.
Consider the amount that companies spend building their brand which can quickly and easily be destroyed by the application experience. Karl covers this nicely with his shirt story.
I also really like the idea of simple "Thank You" for your application. Something along the lines of "We really appreciate your application, we value your skills and experience and will be in contact shortly once we have reviewed all the applicants. If you have not heard from me within 10 days, please feel free to email me on joblogs@xcompany.co.uk."
If I received that response from a Recruiter I would feel appreciated and even if I was rejected, would have no hesitation in recommending them to a friend or colleague.
We provide all advertisers with an array of simple and easy to use communication templates to respond to applicants, please use them!
