Scholarship scheme to help young people train in our industry.

This came through from Digital Printer by email and I think it definitely deserves highlighting.

It's great we continue to encourage young people to train in our industry by giving scholarship awards to help towards their costs, especially in today's tough economic climate.

BPIF scholarships are renamed Print Futures Awards
The scholarship scheme jointly sponsored by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), Unite the Union and the Printers’ Charitable Corporation (PCC) for the past five years is being relaunched for 2009. It has a new name intended to inspire and support young people training for a career in the printing and graphic arts industries.

Now called the Print Futures Awards, the 2009 programme is designed to assist young people in funding their education and training for a career in the printing and graphic arts industries. Awards of £2,500 each are available to people aged 16 – 30 who are resident in the UK. The closing date for entries is 30 April 2009. Interviews will be held during May and June and the awards will be presented in July.

Past winners have included students on established print and print management courses, graphic design students, employees of family-owned print businesses, prepress specialists, pressroom managers and operators, PhD students and technicians from the consumables sector and publishing print production staff. Winners have chosen to spend their awards in a variety of ways including course fees, travel costs for study tours, books, computers and software.

Applications may also be made by people currently undergoing company training. Successful applicants in this category will receive an award of £1,250 on condition that their employers will fund an equal sum in 2009/2010.

“We are delighted to launch this scholarship scheme for the sixth year. In these tough economic times for our industry we expect the Awards to be of increased interest, particularly for young people seeking to get a foothold on a career in print and the graphic arts,” said Mike Hopkins, director of the BPIF.

An explanatory brochure and application form designed and printed for the scheme by Manor Creative is available from Terry Ulrick, the Print Futures Awards secretary, at terryulrick@tucommunications.co.uk or 01444 831918. Alternatively, an application form can be downloaded from www.britishprint.com, www.unitetheunion.org.uk or www.printerscharitablecorporation.co.uk
