Choosing the right job
Choosing the right job can be one of the most stressful things you will experience. I have spent sleepless nights in the past writing down the pro's and con's of accepting a new job.
Deciding which is the best fit for you is all about what is right for you, your personality, your likes and dislikes and of course your experience. Make sure you do your research and try and find out as much about the organisation as possible.
Asking the right questions at the interview can have a huge impact on the decision you make. Write a list of questions that are important to you and don't forget that it's usually bad bosses that make your job difficult.
Here are a few examples of some questions that you could ask at interview which will help you decide if this company, role and boss are right for you:
- What specific results are you expecting in the first three months? six? one year? How will you measure those results?
- To whom can I go for questions whilst I am learning? How much time are you(the company) planning on devoting to me whilst I am learning my new role?
- Ask your prospective boss to give you an example of a top performing employee. You will then learn what he or she thinks is a good performer and measure yourself against his/her criteria.
- What are the biggest problems that need resolution within the first six months? What have you done so far to address these? Who else will be working with me on these issues?
- Why have you gone outside to fill this position? (You will learn a bit more about career prospects within the organisation)
- Ask if you can spend a day with the department you will be working in before you make your decision.
Never be afraid to follow your instincts if a company doesn't feel right. Another better opportunity may be just around the corner.
