Funny but sad job interviews!

The Scotland on Sunday had a fantastic article written by Eddie Barnes yesterday about the state of the Education system in Scotland.

A really interesting read but for me the case studies about youngsters going for interviews and how they handled them, just demonstrates how indifferent their attitude really is.

Case Study 1: A recent school leaver goes into a job interview. Halfway through, while answering questions, he starts texting his mates.

Case Study 2: A student visits a local firm which requires young talented graduates. He begins picking at his jumper, and, having loosened a piece of thread, begins flossing his teeth with it in front of the firm's managing director.

Case Study 3: A group of girls visit an IT firm which supplies the oil and gas industry in the north-east. After inquiries, it turns out none of them actually want to work there. It isn't "glamorous". Instead, they want to "do hair and nails".

For me there are only 1 or 2 people who can be blamed for this attitude - Parents.

I know a lot of you will vehemently disagree with me, but surely its up to us as parents to instill manners, attitude and work ethic. Yes, the education system has a role to play in educating the children and preparing them for their lives ahead but the really important values are down to us.

I think its easier for parents not to parent, so they can get on with whatever they need to do. With both parents working becoming the norm, then whatever spare time they do have is spent, cleaning, shopping and just keeping the household operating.

Finding a little time educating your children on personal responsibility, reaping what you sow and you make your own luck may have a bigger impact on the attitude of youngsters in life including the all important interview that they will all face in the future.

As parents we want to give our children everything but my belief is, in doing this we are actually giving them nothing.
